Abstract
Preterm infants are at a heightened risk for developmental difficulties and more dependent upon their caregiving environment for regulation due to their neurological immaturity. A premature birth is also a major stressor to the family system that constitutes the caregiving environment. We conducted a systematic review of quantitative studies to investigate whether families of preterm children differ from families with full-term children in their family interactions. A second aim was to investigate what impact the quality of family interaction has on child development. Of the eleven studies included, nine were deemed to be of good quality, while two were deemed to be of poor quality. Our results show that the quality of family interactions... (More)

A second aim was to investigate what impact the quality of family interaction has on child development. Of the eleven studies included, nine were deemed to be of good quality, while two were deemed to be of poor quality. Our results show that the quality of family interactions is either equal or poorer in families of preterm children compared to families with full-term children. Importantly, the links between quality of family interactions and child development outcomes were stronger for preterm children compared to full-term children. Thus, the systematic review findings highlight the importance of strengthening family interactions, both for the sake of the family members and their interactions, and in order to promote the development of preterm children. Notably, the present review provides the first systematic overview of family function and quality of triadic interactions in preterm families. Given the limited number of studies with such focus, the potential for definitive conclusion is restricted. More observational studies, particularly in the period of post infancy, are needed in order to identify the specific aspects of family interactions that may be most influential for the development of children born preterm, and whether certain periods are sensitive to this end. Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
