- Abstract
- The aim of this study was to investigate how probation inspectors relate to the supportive and controlling role in the meeting with the client. The method chosen for this study was qualitative interviews with seven probation inspectors from two different cities in southern Sweden. In analyzing our results we applied social psychology, symbolic interactionism, role theory and the concept of discretion, to illustrate the probation inspector's dual roles in the client meeting. The results showed that there were difficulties in maintaining the balance between the supportive role and the controlling role as a probation inspector. However, it was of great importance to clarify roles in the meeting with the client and clarify the obligations of both parties. The framework law of probation entails a structure in the work, while the scope for action is a variation. Another result showed that probation distributes interventions in the form of psychological contact, manager talks and crisis support when the probation inspector experiences emotional stress in his work. Many probation officers feel relieved to be able to talk to their colleagues in emotional and stressful situations. (Less)
