- Abstract
- The district Lillåudden, located next to Lake Mälaren in Västerås is one of many exploited waterfront areas in the 2000s. The flood risk in Mälaren is expected to decrease with the remodeling of Slussen in Stockholm, however there is great uncertainty regarding the relationship between land uplift and sea level rise in the next century due to global warming. This leads to concerns about future floods in the area. The thesis aims to investigate how planners and residents perceive the risk of floods in Lillåudden by analyzing documents and interviews. Yosef Jabareens (2015) theory the risk city, which builds on Ulrich Becks (2000) the risk society is used as a basis to analyze risk, trust, and practices within the city. The results show that... Yosef Jabareens (2015) theory the risk city, which builds on Ulrich Becks (2000) the risk society is used as a basis to analyze risk, trust, and practices within the city. The results show that the original planning documents contains little to no reflection on climate change and climate adaption measures, and the flood risk is either ignored or accepted. In the more recent municipal document Risk och sårbarhetsanalys Västerås stad 2020, rising sea levels due to climate change is addressed as a risk of flooding in Lillåudden. This fact indicate that the city seems to produce risks that they need to debate, prevent, and manage in the future. The interviews with residents in the district display the awareness of risk of floods in the area, but the level of concern is relatively low. There is also a high level of trust in the authorities among the residents to solve a future potential flood. (Less)
