Abstract
Workplace incivility is a phenomenon which has been observed increasingly in Swedish workplaces. The aim of the study was to examine whether there is a relation between experienced workplace incivility and how it is connected to individual differences in the personality factors agreeableness and openness, as well as to age and experienced job security. This was examined through a cross-sectional study, in the form of a survey which was distributed through Facebook. Workplace incivility is a phenomenon which has been observed increasingly in Swedish workplaces. The aim of the study was to examine whether there is a relation between experienced workplace incivility and how it is connected to individual differences in the personality factors agreeableness and openness, as well as to age and experienced job security. This was examined through a cross-sectional study, in the form of a survey which was distributed through Facebook. The 107 participants were between 20 and 65 years of age and worked within 22 different trades on the Swedish labor market. The survey consisted of previously validated instruments and of self-constructed questions. These instruments consisted of a Swedish translation of Cortinas Incivility Scale, and of a Swedish translation of the Big Five Inventory.
The results from this study showed a positive correlation between experienced workplace incivility and openness, as well as a negative correlation between experienced workplace incivility and agreeableness. Further, no significant relation between experienced workplace incivility and age was identified, hence, we are not able to validate previous research. However, a significant negative correlation between experienced workplace incivility and experienced job security could be observed, which do correspond to previous research.
The results showed that there are weak to medium-strength correlations between the level of agreeableness, openness and experienced job security in relation to experienced workplace incivility, but for continued research a more representative sample is recommended in order to be able to draw explicit conclusions. Resultaten visade på ett positivt samband mellan upplevt ohövligt beteende och graden av openness, samt ett negativt samband mellan upplevt ohövligt beteende och graden av agreeableness. Vidare kunde inget signifikant samband mellan upplevt ohövligt beteende och ålder identifieras, därmed kan vi inte med vår undersökning styrka tidigare forskning som visat på att ett samband finns. Därtill observerades en signifikant negativ korrelation mellan upplevt ohövligt beteende och upplevd anställningstrygghet, vilket överensstämmer med resultat från tidigare forskning.
Undersökningen visade att det finns svaga till medelstarka samband mellan graden av agreeableness, openness och upplevd anställningstrygghet i relation till upplevt ohövligt beteende, men för fortsatt forskning rekommenderas ett mer representativt urval för att kunna dra tydliga slutsatser. (Less)
