Knowledge sharing and creation in women with ADHD on TikTok

Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the knowledge sharing and creation practices of adult women with ADHD on TikTok. This thesis also provides a methodological exploration of the implications of ethics, method and sampling when conducting research on TikTok, and contributes to previous studies on TikTok communities by proposing a digital ethnography bricolage, as a suitable method for approaching the multimodal and interactive shape of the app. Research and resources were spread on the app through several communicative modes, where users with access to such sources shared it for the women who didn't. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the knowledge sharing and creation practices of adult women with ADHD on TikTok. This thesis also provides a methodological exploration of the implications of ethics, method and sampling when conducting research on TikTok, and contributes to previous studies on TikTok communities by proposing a digital ethnography bricolage, as a suitable method for approaching the multimodal and interactive shape of the app. Research and resources were spread on the app through several communicative modes, where users with access to such sources shared it for the women who didn't. Furthermore, experiential knowledge created through sharing experiences of the past, verbalising inner dialogue, explaining experiences through analogies and by visualising otherwise hidden aspects of ADHD provide clues that, when understood as a whole, creates a space for recognising patterns of living, and growing up, with ADHD. Finally, TikTok served as a non-judgemental space for support where the women were able to renegotiate their negative ideas of ADHD. As a whole, TikTok was seen as a positive space with many modes for sharing information to those who may not otherwise have access to information about ADHD. (Less)
