- Abstract
- Studies have been made on food deserts all around the world. Sweden is however an outlier, and few studies have been made regarding locating and trying to explain food deserts. The aim of this study is to answer the questions: Do food deserts occur in Sweden? Which factors affect the spatial distribution of grocery stores? A food desert in this study is defined as an area without a grocery store within one kilometre walking distance. This was done using a network analysis in a GIS-software to show the coverage of grocery stores within one kilometre walking distance, in Malmo Sweden, combined with interviews from one government official and two grocery store representatives. The main findings are that there is a food desert according to the definition used in this study, in the southwestern part of Malmo. The lack of a grocery store in this area could be explained with the material from the interviewees. Form of housing being mainly villas, lack of other business and service and low flow of costumers was described by the interviewees as unattractive locations for establishing grocery stores, and these characterise the area in question.
