Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
Phubbing describes the phenomenon when one or more people during a social interaction pick up their mobile phone and direct their attention to it instead of the person or people they are hanging out with. Phubbing has in previous quantitative studies been shown to give rise to negative emotions and seems to affect relationships and relationship quality negatively. Therefore, this qualitative study intends to answer the research question: How is phubbing experienced from an individual and a relational perspective? Eight semi-structured focus groups were held with a total of 28 participants. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis resulting in three main themes. Eight semi-structured focus groups were held with a total of 28 participants. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis resulting in three main themes. Theme 1 describes how phubbing is so common that participants often have an understanding of their own and others' phubbing. At the same time, the participants experience negative feelings and thoughts as a result of being phubbed, but that the reaction depends on various contextual factors, which are described in Theme 2. They also experience that their relationships are negatively affected by phubbing in both the short and long term. Finally, Theme 3 describes how participants experience that clear communication can reduce the negative effects of phubbing. The study contributes with unique perspectives to phubbing and is the first of its kind to investigate the phenomenon in a Swedish context. (Less)
