- Abstract
- Pre-electoral coalitions affect the involved parties in a unique and yet a quite undiscovered way. The
largest and most successful pre-electoral coalition in Sweden was called the Alliance and was created
prior to the 2006 parliament election.. Although pre-electoral coalitions are heavily underrepresented in
coalition studies, there are existing hypotheses about the connection between parties entering

an attempt to achieve a deeper understanding about the strategies of parties involved in PECs. We find
that some of the hypotheses are correctly applicable to this case, mainly for the largest party in the PEC,
Moderaterna. The smaller parties does not seem to follow the hypothesis nor have a connection between
election results and party positions. Furthermore we discuss the issues parties involved in a PEC have
with making the public change their perception of the parties ideological position. We conclude the
nature of how political positions are studied and tied to election result are not focused towards the voters
perceptions cripple the ability to clearly observe the relationship. (Less)
