- Abstract
- This study aims to answer the question of why different cases of sportswashing is represented differently in the newspapers. Although the critique and accuses of sportswashing carries almost the same ground of arguments, the amount and intensity of a holistic discourse varies. The chosen tournaments to compare is the three most recent in modern time, FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, Olympics Beijing 2022, and FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. To get a result, articles from the biggest newspapers in Sweden is being analyzed through a critical discourse analysis, where themes of sportswashing, orientalism and political awareness is identified and at the same time contributing to explain why the amount of critique varies. - This study aims to answer the question of why different cases of sportswashing is represented differently in the newspapers. Although the critique and accuses of sportswashing carries almost the same ground of arguments, the amount and intensity of a holistic discourse varies. The chosen tournaments to compare is the three most recent in modern time, FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, Olympics Beijing 2022, and FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. To get a result, articles from the biggest newspapers in Sweden is being analyzed through a critical discourse analysis, where themes of sportswashing, orientalism and political awareness is identified and at the same time contributing to explain why the amount of critique varies. The study concludes that in the cases of Beijing 2022 and Qatar 2022, tendencies of orientalism is present in the discourse. That, combined with the increasing level of political awareness in Sweden, contributes to the fact that these tournaments received a more holistic and negative representation in the medias, compared to Russia 2018. The issue of sportswashing has gained significant attention and is actively discussed, which is of importance since it’s a challenge for the sports community and the political questions of our time.
