Digital Business Models and the Circular Economy: Understanding the utilisation of Digital Business Models for the Circular Economy values

- Abstract
- Digitalisation and its effect on the circular economy have been a major debate. Thus, this study investigates the possible contributions of Digital Business Models (DBMs) toward the Circular Economy (CE) by utilising circular economy core values through its multiple dimensions. Following a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight participants in the retail sector. Our analysis shows a direct utilisation of DBMs for one of the circular economy core values which is close the loops. While it shows an indirect utilisation for

the other two circular economy core values, which are, extend lifespan and resource efficiency. Moreover, the study reveals a possible utilisation for an additional value that resulted from the intersection of DBMs and CE value which is CE’s information sharing. We conclude that while considering the existing utilisation for the CE core values, there is still a high potential for DBMs to strengthen the utilisation of CE values by exploiting industry 4.0 digital applications.
