Abstract
Public spaces are central in most forms of urban planning and design since they play an important role in people’s wellbeing and social life. This study, however, explores public spaces in an often-neglected context: the rural. The research highlights and processes three public spaces in the Swedish village Kivik, a popular tourist destination on the east coast of Scania. Henri Lefebvre’s theory on production of space has been adapted and applied to analyse how rural public space is produced, used and perceived by the local community and planning actors. By incorporating Lefebvre’s spatial triad with data gathered through interviews and observations, the research investigates how such framework can be used to identify conflicts and... (More)

By incorporating Lefebvre’s spatial triad with data gathered through interviews and observations, the research investigates how such framework can be used to identify conflicts and important characteristics in each public space. Additionally, the research emphasises the role of a strong local community in reducing tensions within the spatial triad in tourism-driven locations such as Kivik. Ultimately, this study shows how Lefebvre’s framework can be utilised to understand rural public spaces in a critical way, suggesting that such an approach can be beneficial for planners and local communities to adopt.
