(Less) - Abstract

Purpose: The study aims to examine if and how the COVID-19 crisis affected the capital structure of volatile Swedish companies.
Method: The study adopts a deductive approach and a quantitative method, employing multiple regression analysis on relevant panel data, subsequently analyzed based on relevant theoretical frameworks. The data ranges from 2017-2022 and includes Swedish companies within the restaurant industry. The regression aims to examine whether there is a relationship between the dummy variable crisis year and the dependent variable debt ratio.
Theoretical Perspectives: The study primarily draws on the Tradeoff and Pecking Order theories, along with prior research on capital structure and its relation to crises.
Empirical Foundation: Regressions are based on data retrieved from Retriever Business, encompassing 50,613 observations from 9,079 companies operating in the restaurant industry in Sweden.
Results and Conclusion: The study found a statistically significant negative relationship between crisis years and debt ratio for the sample. (Less)
