Through qualitative interviews with four women’s shelters following questions is answered: “How does the organisations work with women’s separatism and how is this related to a form of strategic essentialism?” “How does this way of working affect the inclusion of LGBTQ people?” and “Is an inclusive way of working with domestic violence compatible with the broader work against men’s violence against women?” The results show how women’s separatism is fundamental for the structure of the women’s shelters and is an important aspect of the work that the shelters do in the struggle against men’s structural violence against women, but in the practice, it also contributes to the exclusion of LGBTQ people.
