The objects of the study are two governments: the current liberal and conservative government and the former social democratic and green government. This research investigates how the two governments employ strategic narratives within foreign policy, to articulate their respective commitment to global gender equality. Thus the theory of strategic narrative is applied, and a comparison between the two narratives is conducted. Using officially published documents and speeches by the government, this research undertakes a descriptive case study together with a qualitative content analysis. To investigate how the strategic narratives are employed, three types of strategic narratives are identified: context narrative, system narrative and identity narrative, as well as how the narratives align with one another to create a comprehensive political story. The findings reveal that while the former government highlights its prioritized, global and leading commitment, the current government articulates a commitment that is prioritized but within the framework of Swedish interest and the country’s surrounding area.
