Abstract
This study aims to identify and categorize the political engagement of artist Taylor Swift on Instagram and Twitter/X between 2018 and 2024. By doing this the objective is to determine whether Swift can be classified as a "celebrity politician 2" (CP2) according to John Street’s definition. This definition encompasses celebrities who utilize their platforms to engage politically without seeking elected office. By applying a qualitative content analysis of Swift’s political posts on these platforms, the study reveals that from 2018 to 2020, she was highly politically active. During this period, Swift openly supported various political candidates, advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, and highlighted racial issues in the US. However, after 2020, her... (More)

During this period, Swift openly supported various political candidates, advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, and highlighted racial issues in the US. However, after 2020, her political engagement decreased, shifting her classification from a CP2 to more of a "celebrity advocate," as defined by Marsh et al. This transition from active political participation to a more neutral stance may reflect a strategic choice by Swift to avoid accusations of overstepping her expertise, or it may simply indicate a reduced personal interest in US politics. The findings in this study is a contribution to existing research in the field of celebrity politics, which is continuously changing due to the fusion of politics and culture around the world. (Less)
