Abstract
In Sweden, as in many other countries, there is an increasing elderly population, which poses both challenges and opportunities for municipalities. Nevertheless, it is crucial to address their needs to ensure healthy aging and continued social inclusion to advance the prospects. The framework encompasses eight themes of planning perspectives, which this study intends to use to examine how Helsingborg stad incorporates the elderly friendly concept into their urban planning. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a framework to encourage cities to become more age-friendly, focusing on enabling elderly to stay actively engaged in society and fostering social health. The framework encompasses eight themes of planning perspectives, which this study intends to use to examine how Helsingborg stad incorporates the elderly friendly concept into their urban planning. The work is based on a case study utilizing both content analysis of five official planning documents from Helsingborgs stad and interviews conducted with two employees specializing in urban planning. The findings indicate that Helsingborgs stad integrates elderly-friendly characteristics across multiple dimensions, aligning with the framework produced by WHO. In some cases their planning goes beyond, demonstrating a deliberate emphasis on dementia friendly planning. Nevertheless, there are still areas for improvement according to the framework, which might be enabled by joining the WHO’s global network for elderly friendly cities and communities. (Less)
