The Incel Value Scale: Exploring the Connection Between Incel Values, Narcissism, Masculinity Threat and Violent Fantasies
(2024) PSYP01 20241Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- To further our understanding of incel aggression this current study aimed to develop a new psychometric tool for measuring the incel identity through underlying incel values and exploring the potential relationships between incel values, masculinity threat, narcissism, and violent fantasies. The incel value scale (IVS) was developed through exploratory factor analysis on a population of N = 99 men. The relationship between incel values, masculinity threat, narcissism and violent fantasies was assessed through multiple regression analysis on N = 69 men. The result showed that IVS consisted of incel values related to the idea of incel victimhood, genetic determinism, an unbalanced dating market, male superiority, and dehumanization of women.... The relationship between incel values, masculinity threat, narcissism and violent fantasies was assessed through multiple regression analysis on N = 69 men. The result showed that IVS consisted of incel values related to the idea of incel victimhood, genetic determinism, an unbalanced dating market, male superiority, and dehumanization of women. Multiple regression analysis uncovered that experiencing status threat was a strong predictor for agreeing with incel values. All other predictors for incel values and all predictors for violent fantasies were non-significant. The IVS provides a much-needed tool to measure agreement with incel values and further explore the incel identity and its connection to incel aggression. Future research should focus on further validating the IVS as well as comparing populations with an extreme agreement to incel values with other populations to explore if there is a significant difference in masculinity threat, narcissism, and violent fantasies.
