- Abstract
- The aim of this thesis is to explore the importance of sustainable urban mobility in the context of the housing affordability crisis. Housing affordability crisis is a concern across the globe. - The aim of this thesis is to explore the importance of sustainable urban mobility in the context of the housing affordability crisis. Housing affordability crisis is a concern across the globe. Finding strategies and solutions to mitigate the housing affordability crisis is in the interest of the whole society. While the connection between affordable housing and the housing costs is a well- understood phenomenon, the importance of urban mobility in relation to this problem is often overlooked. A qualitative method was chosen for the research and semi-structured interviews were conducted with actors of an interrelated network. These actors represent different segments of the network with an insight into a different angle of the problematisation at hand.
The results show a deeper link between mobility and affordable housing than previously thought. Changes in people's mobility behaviour can affect both housing prices and transport costs, both of which are important for affordability. Sustainable Urban Mobility can promote a change in the housing development regulations and practices. It was also found that there is a network of stakeholders involved in the affordable housing crisis, whose strategic success is highly interdependent, but whose decisions are sometimes biased according to their interests and willingness to change. This conflict of interests can lead to difficulties in cooperation.
The findings of this thesis add to previous research by providing a more comprehensive understanding of how sustainable urban mobility can be a pillar of strategies aimed at mitigating the housing affordability crisis. The strategies and connections found in this research can be strategically relevant for the stakeholders concerned with the housing affordability crisis. (Less)
