Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
There is no clarity on what instrument knowledge in piano should contain. We can see that the construction, functions and instrument knowledge vary significantly depending on if it is an acoustic or digital piano instruments. Our purpose with the study is to learn what instrument knowledge means and contains for different piano teachers related to the different variants of the piano instrument. The background of the study is based on our own backgrounds and experiences as students and future piano teachers. Our purpose with the study is to learn what instrument knowledge means and contains for different piano teachers related to the different variants of the piano instrument. In our background and previous research, we aim to highlight curriculum documents at different levels of education as well as the educational form of music schools and clarify concepts such as musical instruments and instrument knowledge. We are writing about the history of the acoustic piano and digital keyboard instruments and then we clarify concepts, construction, and functions of today’s different piano variants.
To answer our research questions, our method has been designed based on semi- structured qualitative interviews with a narrative focus and analysis. We have interviewed three piano teachers with different experiences in instrument knowledge linked to their background and pedagogical work. Our results show that the informants’ understanding of instrument knowledge and how they work with it in different ways depends on genre, instrument expertise, workplaces, conditions, and different goals as musician. In the discussion we discuss which knowledge piano teachers need in acoustic and digital instrument knowledge and the impact of the instrument history linked to music and technical development. We have also discussed that students need the right type of education in instrument knowledge in piano that their reality demands. At the end of the discussion, we recommend different approaches and methods to become a better piano teacher in instrument knowledge. (Less)
