Navigating Broader Horizon: The Migration Narratives of Bangladeshi Mid-Career Professionals

Abstract
International migration holds significant importance in the socioeconomic reality
of Bangladesh. As a top migrant sender Bangladesh receives substantial amount of
remittance which plays a key role in the economy. Livelihood migration towards
middle east and east Asia is mostly the dominant trend yet migration to settle in the
developed world is getting popular among Bangladeshi skilled professions lately.
This thesis seeks to explore how migration appears a choice in the life-course of the
Bangladeshi professionals.

developed world is getting popular among Bangladeshi skilled professions lately.

Bangladeshi professionals.
With an ethnographic approach it employs in-depth interviews, life histories and
focus group discussion to build an understanding of the phenomenon from the
narratives of Bangladeshi professionals living in Malmö, Sweden. Life course
approach in research helps to incorporate macro-micro perspective. Appadurai’s
theory on globalization, Gardner and Åkesson’s ethnography on imagining relating
to migration compose a theoretical lens to examine the phenomenon. The analysis
finds that migration decisions of Bangladeshi skilled professionals are influenced
by a complex interplay of individual, professional, and broader socio-economic
factors. It is a strategic response to the systematic challenges they faced in their
embedded life. Their vision of ideal life doesn’t fit into the ‘mega rhetoric of
development’ in Bangladesh. Eventually their migration is a search for better
