- Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of salaried digital nomads surged, reshaping leader-employee interactions and presenting new challenges for internal organizational communication. This study employs the five elements of the Perceived Effectiveness of Leaders Communication Scale and applies a contingency approach, incorporating Leadership Behavioral Complexity Theory, to explore the communication dynamics between salaried digital nomads and their leaders. - Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of salaried digital nomads surged, reshaping leader-employee interactions and presenting new challenges for internal organizational communication. This study employs the five elements of the Perceived Effectiveness of Leaders Communication Scale and applies a contingency approach, incorporating Leadership Behavioral Complexity Theory, to explore the communication dynamics between salaried digital nomads and their leaders. Using qualitative methods, the research is based on semi-structured interviews with Chinese salaried digital nomads. The findings offer a comprehensive depiction of these dynamics and reveal a dissonance between certain leadership communication practices and the values of digital nomads. The results imply that organizational power and control are being further negotiated in this context, and there is a need to enhance leaders’ “big picture” communication and empowerment of employee self-management. The study also indicates that perceived effective leaders of salaried DNs are those who successfully blend task-oriented and relationship-oriented behaviors, balancing both effectively, and embody multiple roles, among other essential traits. This research enhances and extends the academic understanding of virtual leadership and internal communication within this rapidly growing workforce segment. It also provides actionable insights for organizations to better adapt to digital work environments and for leaders to enhance their leadership with salaried DNs as well as other remote workers.
