- Abstract
- This thesis examines how the presidential leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic affected the democracies in Argentina and Brazil between 2020 and 2023. Using a comparative case study and process tracing methodology, we analyse the contrasting strategies of Presidents Alberto Fernández and Jair Bolsonaro. Drawing on Robert Dahl’s democratic criteria and Hélène Landemore’s theory of epistemic democracy, the study examines how different approaches to crisis management, ranging from lockdowns to political communication, shaped democratic outcomes in both countries. While Brazil, under Bolsonaros leadership, showed signs of democratic backsliding, Argentina demonstrated greater democratic resilience despite certain questionable measures. The... (More)
