Abstract
In today's urban and regional planning, climate change has become a challenging issue, as it has significant effects on sustainability. For Swedish cities, the global temperature has increased by an average of 1,5 degrees celsius since the period between 1961 and 1990. Due to this, climate adaptation is an important asset to limit the negative effects of more intense weather resulting from climate change. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the challenges that climate change will pose to Varbergs new urban development project Västerport and the adaptation strategies that can be implemented to address these challenges. To investigate this, the study uses a mixed-method approach of document analysis, semi-structured interviews and GIS... (More)
In today's urban and regional planning, climate change has become a challenging issue, as it has significant effects on sustainability. To investigate this, the study uses a mixed-method approach of document analysis, semi-structured interviews and GIS with the analytical framework of naturebased- and technical solutions as an example of adaptation strategies. The results show that increased risks of flooding and erosion which can lead to extensive damage to buildings, infrastructure, and human health, as well as deteriorated air quality due to heatwaves are the identified challenges that future climate change scenarios will generate for Västerport. The GIS-analyses illustrate how the proposed nature-based and technical solutions for alternative 1 will protect the majority of Västerport from these challenges. The conclusion highlights the need for future research on more effective adaptation strategies for coastal cities and further investigation for a clearer definition of nature-based and technical solutions.
