Abstract
The aim of this master’s thesis is to illustrate the attitude of a number of public librarian’s towards audiobooks and reading by listening, and to describe their experiences of literature mediation of audiobooks in public libraries. As a result of that I wish to shed light on the position of audiobooks in public libraries today. The background is that the audiobook as a book format has grown big at the commercial book market during the 21st century, meanwhile at public libraries the lending of audiobooks remains quite modest. This is a qualitative study and to collect the empirical material I have performed semi-structured interviews with seven public librarians within seven municipalities in Skåne, Sweden. The aim of this master’s thesis is to illustrate the attitude of a number of public librarian’s towards audiobooks and reading by listening, and to describe their experiences of literature mediation of audiobooks in public libraries. The theoretical approach is the field theory of Pierre Bourdieu and the Dissertation of Jofrid Karner Smidt Mellom elite og publicum. Litterær smak og litteraturformidling blant bibliotekarer i norske folkebibliotek. I have performed a thematic analysis which ended up in five themes that has been analysed according to theory and previous research. My result shows that the attitude of the librarians towards audiobooks could be described as allowing, but that they themselves prefer to read with their eyes. The literature mediation is partly traditional but it is also a widespread opinion among the librarians that the audiobook reader is self- sufficient. Some of the librarians express that their mediation of audiobooks might have been more active if they had been more used to reading by listening. Only one of them is an active audiobook reader and also performs active mediation of audiobooks, but this librarian works in the one library in the study with a focused strategy supporting different formats. The audiobook mediation in public libraries, according to the librarians, is also limited by technical and financial constraints. The position of the audiobook in public libraries could, from the result of this study, be described as less strong than for printed books. (Less)
