(2025) SPAK01 20251Spanish Studies
- Abstract (Spanish)
(Less)
- Abstract
- This thesis examines the literary space of Macondo and its transformation due to external national influences in One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) by Gabriel García Márquez. A case study is conducted of three key episodes in Macondo’s increasing contact with the state. The objective of the study is to analyze their respective spatial logics as a basis of the production and transformation of Macondo as a space, and to investigate how these opposing logics are evaluated in the novel. The analysis draws on Henri Lefebvre’s (1991) concept of the production of space and his model of the spatial triad, complemented by Aníbal Quijano’s (2000) theory of the coloniality of power, which together offer a novel approach. The results reveal that the... (More)

The results reveal that the production of Macondo as a space stems from two fundamentally different spatial logics, with the state producing the village as a conceived space from a position of centralized power. Owing to its dominant nature, the state's perspective overrides and transforms Macondo, disregarding it as a lived space. The findings suggest that neither of the two spatial logics is fully legitimized by the novel. (Less)
