Improving reach of health promotion during implementation in a Swedish municipality setting
(2021) 25th Nordic Gerontology Congress in June 2 - 4 2021- Abstract
- Introduction: To reach the intended target group is crucial if the health effects potentially following health promoting interventions for seniors shall be realized. The aim of this study was to improve reach of health promotion during implementation in a Swedish municipality context.
Material & Methods: A mixed-methods approach was applied during four phases in which recruitment and intervention procedures were tested and modified as to improve reach. Eligible participants were seniors who were recruited consecutively as they applied for early home care services e.g., help with cleaning or being provided with a safety alarm. In all, the estimated population was approximately 240 persons each year. Data collection included...
Data collection included information on the flow of participants during recruitment and participation in the intervention, field notes focused on recruitment and intervention procedures and qualitative interviews exploring the experience of participants. Initially, participants were offered to participate in health promoting senior meetings; from the third phase, also a preventive home visit was offered.
Results: The identification of potential participants and recruitment was challenging. As recruitment procedures were modified, reach increased from 6% (phase 1), 14% (phase 2) to 54% (phase 3). Phase 4 is ongoing from February 2020 and preliminary findings will be presented.
Conclusion: For health promoting senior meetings to fulfill their potential in positively affecting health outcomes in community-dwelling older people as well as contributing in a cost-effective use of resources, recruitment procedures for optimizing reach is a critical feature that can be modified with positive results.
