- This study examines how the Latin manuscript collection of Queen Christina of Sweden was formed, what function it served for the queen and for others, and how various attempts to impose order on it reflect different epistemological traditions. A recurring theme of the study is the creation of order and the title, The Mild Boredom of Order, a quotation taken from an essay on book collecting by Walter Benjamin, refers to this pervasive theme. The theoretical and methodological basis is book historical, and accordingly characterized by a sociological orientation, where special interest is shown the interplay between many agents, and the concept of order is understood in a number of interrelated ways. The traditional and prevalent portrait of Queen Christina as a book collector is called into question through the shifting of focus from the manuscripts as carriers of an intellectual contents, to the relevance of books and libraries in the construction of the image of Queen Christina. Particular attention is paid to the concept of historical collection related to the Codices Reginenses Latini, and to catalographic policies and practices.
The Latin manuscript collection of Queen Christina, the object of the study, was originally formed in Stockholm by the young queen during her ten years of reign. It is now housed in the Vatican Library as the Fondo Reginense Latino, and the manuscripts as Codices Reginenses Latini, and it is the result of the collective zeal, aspirations, ambitions and ideals of many individuals and institutions. In turn these ideals have been conditioned by a great variety of factors: from private priorities, to visions of the ideal library, models of library management, and political turmoil and war. As opposed to what the name of the collection declares, the Fondo Reginense Latino does not consist solely of manuscripts that have belonged to Christina. Instead several groups of manuscripts with varying provenances, have been added to the collection over time, from 1690 and until today. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)

Kristina som boksamlare är ett annat viktigt tema som handlar om hur man kan se hennes boksamling mer som ett uttryck för ett medvetet image-byggande än som okuvlig intellektuell nyfikenhet, alternativt vild och okontrollerad passion, två bilder av Kristinas samlande som tidigare dominerat i forskningen. Inspirerad av en engelsk studie av mediceernas bibliotek, Angelo Polizianos roll som rådgivare och vad vissa typer av böcker signalerar, görs en ny läsning av Kristinas samling.
Vid Kristinas död 1689 hamnade de handskrivna böckerna på Vatikanen, de tryckta skingrades. Vatikanbiblioteket vid 1600-talets slut beskrivs och två svenska Rom-resenärer kommer till tals och beskriver den svenska ex-drottningens bibliotek på plats i Vatikanen: Olof Celsius 1698 och nästan 100 år senare Jacob Johan Björnståhl 1772. Nu började Kristinas samling att leva sitt Vatikan-liv. I detta sammanhang diskuteras begreppet ”historisk samling” och ett antal tillägg till drottningens samling analyseras. Det handlar om handskrifter från två romerska kloster, Sant’ Andrea Della Valle och San Silvestro al Quirinale (1696 och 1705) respektive om en liten grupp handskrifter som inlemmades någon gång före 1750 och som alla visar tecken på att ha gått igenom den kyrkliga censuren. De bär anteckningar av den tjänsteman som ansvarade för denna, Magister Sacri Palatii.
Ett annat viktigt tema är tillgänglighet. Kopplat till Vatikanbibliotekets öppnande för den forskande allmänheten på 1880-talet diskuteras olika katalogtraditioner och biblioteksideal.
Sammanfattningsvis: Gängse bilder ändras, perspektiv vidgas, fokus läggs på andra ting än tidigare forskning gjort, vilket gör att andra saker framträder: inte bara biblioteket som en samling texter som berättar om Kristinas stora lärdom utan också biblioteket som ett uttryck för makt, för tidens smak, historiska omständigheter, och faktiskt också slumpen. Genom att inte bara fokusera på Kristina utan också titta runtomkring, på hennes bibliotekarier, på den intellektuella miljö de verkar i, på andra samlare och på fenomen som katalogiserings- och restaureringsfrågor mot en bakgrund av samhälleliga förhållanden (Italiens enande, historievetenskapernas ställning i Tyskland osv) träder en delvis ny bild fram.
