The Importance of Agility in the Packaging Printing Industry
(2007) 19th Annual NOFOMA Conference, 2007- Abstract
- Today, the demand for shorter lead times, shorter production runs and more diversified products is a general market trend, which puts pressure on logistics systems. When adapting to this trend, agile manufacturing becomes increasingly important. Flexible printing activities, in particular, are needed when products and packaging designs increasingly are to be adapted for niche markets. This study sets out to increase our understanding of this part of the supply chain.

While there is a market demand for more agile approaches, there is a cost trade-off that might limit the span of manoeuvre of production companies. The question is whether packaging printers, in a competitive market with small margins, have adopted agile manufacturing principles?
This survey study sets out to investigate the importance of agile manufacturing at Swedish printing houses in the packaging segment and to explore how they are differentiating themselves, with respect to flexibility, delivery time, quality and price.
The study indicates that the printing houses are working or at least are striving to work according agile manufacturing principles. Thus, the factors flexibility, short delivery times and quality got higher rankings than low price, with respect to how they bad differentiated their offers. These results show that packaging printers have certain requirements to be part of agile supply chains.
The way the printing houses had differentiated themselves and their belief in a greater variety, smaller order sizes and a demand for marc rapid deliveries in the future indicate that agile manufacturing is important in the packaging printing industry. (Less)
