Luther’s Use and Reception of Erasmus’ New Testament
(2021) In Publikationer fra Det Teologiske Fakultet p.53-82- Abstract
- The article examines Martin Luther’s reception of Erasmus’ Novum Testamentum omne as a translator of the text of the second edition (1519) and as an engaged reader of the Annotations in the fourth edition (1527). It is concluded that Luther’s primary Vorlage for his German translation of Galatians was the Greek column of Erasmus’ second edition (1519), while his translation of Hebrews mainly reflects the Latin column. Secondly, the article considers Luther’s marginal notes in his copy of Erasmus’ fourth edition. The notes reveal that Luther was often dissatisfied with Erasmus’ philological approach, and this dissatisfaction is explained with reference to their public controversy over the nature of Scripture.
