This paper will present an analysis in musical terms of Viking Eggeling's abstract film the Diagonal Symphony, and it will be shown both that he relied on the most widely used formal pattern of classical music, the sonata form, to mould his only film, and that he employed a number of other musical devices to give interest and coherence to its details. The account will start, however, with a short biographical sketch and with some pertinent general information on the film. (Less)
