Russian Impressions - Orthodox Encounters and Scandinavian Memory
(2010) Orthodoxy in Russian Culture and Society- Abstract
- Stories can be told in different ways, and through various versions reflect various aspects of reality. Realities encountered in different ways are remembered differently, and the different memories create new memories and new remembered realities. So the question in this paper is: How do people in Sweden and Norway tell the stories of the two great Orthodox saints St Anna of Novgorod and St Olav? And more precisely how are they told in relation to Russia? How is the religious Russia seen through these saints’ lives? Both how medieval sources and modern sources relate these stories is discussed in the paper.
