AGR and V2
(2010) In Theoretical Linguistics 36(1). p.57-68- Abstract
- In this communication, we add another piece of evidence in favor of a parametric split to do with AGR (Holmberg 2010) between Insular (ISc) and Mainland Scandinavian (MSc); the extended possibility of non-subject fronting in embedded clauses, here referred to as Extended verb second (xV2), available in ISc, unavailable in MSc. By adding this phenomenon to the list of AGR-related differences between the two language groups, we are reintroducing verb movement, albeit in the shape of a particular type of verb second rather than in terms of V-to-I movement, a shift in perspective that we believe will increase our understanding of the cluster effects at issue if accepted as a possibility. In particular, we propose that the features that are... (More)

In particular, we propose that the features that are responsible for the split must be located in the C- rather than the T system of the clause. (Less)
