Retaining Emphasis on "Systems Approach" when Assessing E-Commerce by Life Cycle Assessment

Abukhader, Sajed LU and Jönson, Gunilla LU (2003)
Abstract
In the issue of using Life cycle assessment (LCA) for assessing E-commerce, we had some epistemological observations, via content analyse method, indicating that LCA has not only aspects of the ‘Systems Approach’ but also of the ‘Analytical Approach’, with even less emphasis on the former in practical terms. The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the connection among these observations, and propose a different way of using LCA in assessing E-commerce. Fundamentally, LCA loses the Systems perspective if used in assessing a product that is transacted via E-commerce, and in order to retain emphasis on the Systems aspects in such studies, another framework of assessment has to be involved: Strategies assessment, which represents what we... Fundamentally, LCA loses the Systems perspective if used in assessing a product that is transacted via E-commerce, and in order to retain emphasis on the Systems aspects in such studies, another framework of assessment has to be involved: Strategies assessment, which represents what we propose as ‘Systems of Systems Analysis’ — a second level of analysis. This assessment is built on a set of strategies of the supply chain Inain processes with the help of the experiences of the available previously performed LCA studies, as well as energy analyses in general.
