Membrane separation processes an overview

Abstract

The food industry, which is a major worldwide industry, is going through a revolution. Changing lifestyles and expectations, such as demand for fewer additives, have placed new demands on the industry, which can only be met by new technology. At the same time, the producers in this very large industry have a further challenge, namely, that of the countervailing power of the retailer. Some years ago, J.K. Galbraith forecasted that the rise of purchasing power by large conglomerates would match the monopoly power of the producing industries. In the food industry, this has already occurred, and even 25 years ago in the United Kingdom, five or six major retailers controlled nearly 80% of the UK market (Field and Howell, 1989). In the food industry, this has already occurred, and even 25 years ago in the United Kingdom, five or six major retailers controlled nearly 80% of the UK market (Field and Howell, 1989). Thus, it is essential that producers design, install, and maintain first-class production systems.
