Wienberg, Jes LU orcid (2020) In ALE 2020(4). p.1-18
Abstract
Lund in Scania is perceived as a medieval town. It has its origin in the Middle Ages for sure, however the concept of such a period is a later invention and the preserved traces are fewer and more transformed than one might believe.

The article presents what remains from the Middle Ages – the cathedral, the nearby library, the monastery of S:t Peter and Mary, the moved ruins of the parish church Maria Minor at the Cultural Museum, the ruins of S:t Trinity in an underground museum, the stone house of the noble Krognos family, the stone house of the chapter dean also moved to the Cultural Museum, the built-in stone house of a canon, the rampart in the City park, the town square, streets and plots, cultural deposits, two... What has been preserved is mainly traces of the Church and the nobility, where the cathedral dominates. However, much of what appears to be medieval is a result of post-medieval restorations and reconstructions, thus the twin towers of the cathedral 1869–77. Most remains from the Middle Ages has been preserved in the underworld of the town, in the cultural deposits, which are constantly reduced due to decay and different encroachments.

Finally, the article discusses the relationship and balance between change and preservation in general and the need also to consider other periods and phenomena in the history of the town other than the Middle Ages, the Church and the nobility.

Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
