More about the bird kills on the roads / Mer om fågeldöden på vägarna
(2004) In Ornis Svecica 14(4). p.185-186- Abstract
- In 1998, I estimated the number of birds killed on Swedish roads at about ten million. This estimate was ten times higher than a previous estimate from 1978. 1 suspected that the difference depended on different methods, and that my estimate was the most correct one. At that time I was not aware of a careful Danish study, which estimated the total road kill of birds at 3.3-3.5 million in that country. Considering the relative size of and the total traffic work in Denmark and Sweden, my estimate is about what one would expect in relation to the Danish estimate. The Danish study supports my belief that about ten million birds are killed every year on the Swedish roads. This is about three percent of all Swedish birds that die every year.... (More)

Although a small proportion, it is quite possible that road kills affect population sizes locally along the roads, even if it does not affect the total populations. (Less)
