Dementia

Gouras, G. K. LU orcid (2009) p.403-408
Abstract

Dementia is a decline in cognitive function that impairs a person's previous level of social and occupational function. Dementia is a very common medical condition that can result from diverse causes. Dementias are classified based on common clinical, genetic, and neuropathological features. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer's disease. Other major classes of disorders that cause dementia are vascular dementias, psychiatric diseases, and other neurodegenerative diseases, including frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body dementia. Toxic-metabolic encephalopathies result from diverse insults that can affect cognitive function; when chronic (lasting for months), these encephalopathies are included in the differential diagnosis of... Toxic-metabolic encephalopathies result from diverse insults that can affect cognitive function; when chronic (lasting for months), these encephalopathies are included in the differential diagnosis of dementia. At present, there are no effective treatments to prevent or reverse the underlying disease process for the most common neurodegenerative diseases of aging that cause dementia. Increased life expectancy is leading to increases in the number of elderly afflicted by dementia and in the associated healthcare costs and resources required for their care.
