(2020) In Kulturstudier 11(1). p.33-61- Abstract
- This article examines the production of futures in the pamphlet Hvis krigen kommer (If War Comes), published by the Prime Minister’s Office and di-stributed to every Danish household in January 1962. In the preceding decades, nuclear science and technology had become central in the imagination of both peaceful and conflict-ridden futures. How to survive a nuclear war – and whether this was even possible – grew into a salient issue in Danish politics and public debate. Following years of political pressure from several directions, the pamph-let provided details about protection in a future war, the preparations made by the government and the options and responsibilities of citizens. Applying the concept of socio-technical imaginaries to the study of civil defence history, we perform a close reading of the leaflet that focuses on its contents and rhetoric as well as the interplay between them. In the socio-technical imaginary presented in the pamphlet, we identify three distinct futures: nuclear war, peace marked by an awareness of the danger of nuclear war and, finally, a future beyond nuclear war.
