Nathan Söderblom and «nationalism» : Riga, Uppsala, and the Ruhr

Due to his ecumenical internationalism, the Swedish Archbishop Nathan Söderblom has been regarded as an opponent of nationalism, contrary to some other Swedish theologians of his time. However, as has been demonstrated by Kjell Blückert, Aila Lauha and others, Söderblom was not without nationalist tendencies. Other scholars have tried to explain his nationalism as mere patriotism. By closely examining exemplary actions of Söderblom in Riga, Uppsala and Ruhr, this article seeks to demonstrate that Söderblom was motivated by nationalist tendencies even while he distanced himself from more extreme forms of nationalism.
