From Canopy to Catastrophe : Understanding the Environmental Crisis in Northern Colombian Amazon

López, Jesica LU orcid (2024)
Abstract
The Colombian peace agreement, which has brought an end to a prolonged internal armed conflict has led to significant land use changes that underscore existing inequalities and struggles over natural resources. The expansion of industries such as cattle ranching, agriculture, and extraction is encroaching on indigenous territories and protected areas, resulting in negative consequences for communities and the environment.
The northern Colombian Amazon, renowned for its rich biodiversity and regional vital ecosystem services, faces the pressing issue of land use change driven by the intensification of livestock activities.
This study investigates the specific case of land use change in the region, focusing on the proliferation of cattle ranching and its implications. Cattle ranching significantly contributes to deforestation in the Colombian Amazon, particularly following the 2016 peace agreement. The expansion of pastures for cattle has led to notable increases in land conversion from forest to agricultural uses.
Through a comprehensive understanding of these dynamics, this research aims to inform policymakers, conservationists, and local stakeholders about the potential impacts of land use change and sustainable land management practices. The results emphasize the need for effective governance mechanisms, including land tenure regularization, environmental regulations, and alternative economic initiatives, to discourage further deforestation and promote conservation in the northern Colombian Amazon.
By employing a mixed method approach, this research uses system analysis to explore the interconnection between deforestation and cattle ranching, emphasizing its threats to biodiversity and food security, by characterizing the various actors involved in cattle ranching activities and land use. Under a deep-established examination of their socio-economic conditions, motivations, and perceptions. Additionally, based on a combination of remote sensing analysis, land cover change mapping, and socio-economic surveys, this study seeks to understand the factors driving land use change and assess its consequences on the local environment and local communities. Lasty, it proposes policy interventions to contend illegal cattle ranching in the Colombian Amazon and pursues to support informed decision-making among key stakeholders.
The findings provide scientific evidence to support and incorporate key actors at local, regional, national, and global levels and engage with impactful stakeholders, so that the characteristics of environmental conservation and land use change can be of effective visibility in socio-ecological policy decision-making processes.
