- This thesis investigates the female novel of development as a specific genre, focusing on Swedish 20th century literature. In the first three chapters, three trilogies are examined, namely Agnes von Krusenstjerna's series about a titled girl (I922-26), Irja Browallius' novels about a foster girl (1957-61), and Ingrid Sjöstrand's series of collective novels about a group of girls from a girls' school (1985-90). The analyses made in this study draw both on recent psychological theories on female development, e.g. Emily Hancock (1989), and on earlier studies on the Anglo-American female novel of development, e.g. Elizabeth Abel et al (1983). - This thesis investigates the female novel of development as a specific genre, focusing on Swedish 20th century literature. In the first three chapters, three trilogies are examined, namely Agnes von Krusenstjerna's series about a titled girl (I922-26), Irja Browallius' novels about a foster girl (1957-61), and Ingrid Sjöstrand's series of collective novels about a group of girls from a girls' school (1985-90). The analyses made in this study draw both on recent psychological theories on female development, e.g. Emily Hancock (1989), and on earlier studies on the Anglo-American female novel of development, e.g. Elizabeth Abel et al (1983). The thesis stresses that Krusenstjerna's, Browallius' and Sjöstrand's trilogies, in spite of the fact that they deal with female protagonists from different classes and different decades, have many features in common, chiefly that growing up female imposes a limitation on the heroine in the patriarchal society that forms the background of these works. The protagonists experience among other things an elusive and therefore enigmatic mother figure and their encounter with the opposite sex is a disappointment, if not a shock, to them. Still, relationships remain the most important aspect of these heroines' lives. In the last chapter of the thesis the perspective is broadened. Some 50 novels of development, both female and male ones, are examined. The two different genres are shown to be structured in different ways. The male protagonist's yearning for liberation from his parents and his background, makes his path of development a linear one, whereas the heroine's keen interest in returning to her girlhood self - her childhood being a comparatively free phase in her life - and/or the, by now, less enigmatic mother figure makes her development a circular one.
