Degrowth is an umbrella term that signifies an absolute reduction of biophysical throughput and a socio-material reorganisation of economies and societies. While there are many existing alternatives that relate to degrowth, they remain rather marginal. This makes the question of politics key to address. This chapter discusses the role of direct democracy and bottom-up organising in degrowth politics, the potential and challenges of engaging with the state, and reflects on how to foster the transformative potential of degrowth.
