Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract
In Sweden, the notion of gender identity is up for renegotiation and an increasing number of people are seeking professional support in relation to these issues. Professionals dealing with gender issues are either the transgender health care, specialized in transgender issues, or general practitioners.
The purpose of the study is to investigate professional work with people who are questioning their gender identity. The study targets a smaller group of professionals who are specialized in working with transgender issues but operating outside the specialized medical care. Not being part of the national standardized care, their work is less explored and less recognized, and takes the form of private therapy or as counseling... (More)

The purpose of the study is to investigate professional work with people who are questioning their gender identity. The study targets a smaller group of professionals who are specialized in working with transgender issues but operating outside the specialized medical care. Not being part of the national standardized care, their work is less explored and less recognized, and takes the form of private therapy or as counseling provided by NGOs. The study was carried out through interviews with six professionals who provide support to people questioning their gender identity. Based on the professionals' descriptions, we ask how they work with people who are questioning their gender identity, what knowledge emerges as important for the work and how their work is related to other health care institutions that work with people who are questioning their gender identity. The results are interpreted within a theoretical framework on knowledge. The analysis points toward the importance of accepting ambivalence and uncertainty, embracing a multi-faceted understanding of gender and gender expression, and professional courage.
