Health Hazards of Building Materials
(1995) In Building Issues- Abstract
- There is growing concern about the possible hazards which can result from the use of certain organic building materials. The issue has received a great deal of attention in industrial countries in temperate climates, because indoor air pollution is frequent in tight, energy efficient buildings with low rates of ventilation. This is not yet a problem all over the world, but an awareness of the risks will help avoid costly and dangerous mistakes.
Contamination of indoor air is only one aspect. Other materials present risks when they are manufactured, applied or removed. There is a general lack of awareness and good practice in handling substances that may have become so familiar that they do not seem dangerous.

Contamination of indoor air is only one aspect. Other materials present risks when they are manufactured, applied or removed. There is a general lack of awareness and good practice in handling substances that may have become so familiar that they do not seem dangerous.
This report describes the hazards which can occur when dealing with four major classes of potential pollutants: paints, timber preservatives, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds. Each of the classes is treated seperately, but some of the general conclusions are also applicable to other potentially hazardous materials.
The following topics are included in the report:
Health hazards from paints during application
Health hazards from paints in service
Health hazards from timber preservatives during application
Health hazards from formaldehyde
Sources and control of formaldehyde in building materials
Health hazards from volatile organic compounds. (Less)
