Comparison of two modeling approaches for a multi-cylinder paper dryer
(2004) A. p.422-429- Abstract
- Two modeling approaches for a multi-cylinder cardboard dryer were compared with
respect to fitting parameters and model structure. Model 1 includes internal mass
transfer while model 2 does not. One important fitting parameter for all models is the
contact heat transfer coefficient between the cylinder and the paper. Two different
correlations, a constant value and a moisture dependant (linear) heat transfer coefficient
were applied on both models. Prediction of the average moisture ratio was found to be
equally good for the two models while they differed in predictability for other and more
detailed information. Model 1 revealed the critical sections in the paper dryer... (More) - Two modeling approaches for a multi-cylinder cardboard dryer were compared with
respect to fitting parameters and model structure.
Model 1 revealed the critical sections in the paper dryer where
high moisture content (providing low strength) and high gas pressures occur in the
paper web. The linear correlation of the contact heat transfer coefficient showed no
advantages in model 1 while it was found to be more appropriate for model 2. The heat
flux is reduced at low moisture ratios in both models but for model 1 the reduction is
due to internal mass transfer resistance rather than reduced contact between the cylinder
and the paper. (Less)
