Schmidt Sabo, Katalin LU (2006) In Lund Studies in Historical Archaeology 1.
Abstract
This PhD thesis is made up of five independent studies and a comprehensive synthesis. The first three studies are published 2001 in the book Vem behöver en by? Kyrkheddinge, struktur och strategi under tusen år (pp. 1-95) (Who needs a village? Kyrkheddinge, Structure and Strategy During a Thousand Years). The remaining two parts and the synthesis are published in the volume Den medeltida byns sociala dimensioner (The Social Dimensions of the Medieval Village).

The remaining two parts and the synthesis are published in the volume Den medeltida byns sociala dimensioner (The Social Dimensions of the Medieval Village).

The common factor which unites the five studies is that they all explore the social dimensions of the village from different perspectives. The studies deal with issues regarding the function of the villages, the relation between individuals and groups, the link between overarching ideologies, social processes and structures - and the living conditions of the individual. Other central concepts in the studies are the impact of space and the built environment on the social organisation, and the interaction between various aspects of society.

The objective of the thesis was to explore the role and function of the villages in the development of medieval society, e.g. how humans, the landscape and the production were influenced and structured by the villages. A particular focus was placed on acknowledging the social dimensions of village life such as how gender relations were used to adjust the relationship between villagers and the surrounding world. Another aim was to assess the substantial village formation which occurred in Scania during the Viking Age and Early Middle Ages in order to see what social consequences were brought on by the change. Special attention was focusing on the archaeological investigation of Kyrkheddinge village in south western Scania.

Results of several humanistic and social disciplines, such as archaeology, history, ethnology, sociology, human geography, art history and gender theory were used. (Less)
