- This book highlights the diverse roles of the humanities in the history of the Swedish welfare society. This society has often been seen as dominated by an instrumental view of knowledge that rewarded the social sciences, natural sciences and technology, but the contributions in this book show the significant role that the humanities played in the Swedish welfare state. Various forms of humanistic knowledge and knowledge actors were part of large networks and left a clear mark on the public sphere and society at large. A narrative of the marginalization and crisis of the humanities in the postwar period must therefore be problematized. - This book highlights the diverse roles of the humanities in the history of the Swedish welfare society. This society has often been seen as dominated by an instrumental view of knowledge that rewarded the social sciences, natural sciences and technology, but the contributions in this book show the significant role that the humanities played in the Swedish welfare state. Various forms of humanistic knowledge and knowledge actors were part of large networks and left a clear mark on the public sphere and society at large. A narrative of the marginalization and crisis of the humanities in the postwar period must therefore be problematized. This edited volume brings together some twenty scholars from a number of humanities disciplines (history, history of ideas, media history, literary studies, archaeology, education, etc.). - Humaniora genomgick en djupgående förändring under efterkrigstiden, både som vetenskapsfält och kulturell företeelse. Av många kom humanistiska studier gradvis att uppfattas som en överflödig lyxföreteelse och klassisk bildning tappade mark i utbildningssystemet. Naturvetenskap, medicin och samhällsvetenskap hade avgjort lättare att motivera sin existens i folkhemmets Sverige. Men även om humaniora kan sägas ha varit på defensiven, så är detta långtifrån hela bilden. Denna antologi visar tvärtom att det humanistiska kunskapsområdet gjorde sig starkt gällande i efterkrigstidens välfärdssamhälle.

Humaniora i välfärdssamhället innehåller texter om brott och straff, skola och pedagogik, kristendom och sekularisering, invandring och tvåspråkighet, kulturarv och stadsförnyelse, miljödebatt och ekologi, försvar och propaganda, press och bokmarknad, folkhemmets samhällsvisioner och reformpolitik. Tillsammans visar de hur humanister och humanistisk kunskap i allra högsta grad var verksamma i och påverkade Sverige från 1940-talet till 1980-talet. Boken knyter an till de internationella forskningsfälten kunskapshistoria och humanioras historia och innehåller bidrag av ett tjugotal svenska forskare från ett antal olika discipliner och lärosäten. Sammantaget ger den inte bara en mångskiftande bild av humanioras utveckling och status utan också ett nytt intressant perspektiv på den svenska efterkrigstiden.
Antologin är en uppföljning till Johan Östlings, Anton Janssons och Ragni Svensson Stringbergs monografi "Humanister i offentligheten" (2022) . (Less)
