Mapping food flows across the urban-rural gradient[s] in secondary cities in Uganda : lessons from Mbale City and Kasese Municipality
(2025) p.323-336- Abstract
Uganda is experiencing rapid rates of urbanisation that include huge demographic changes and the incorporation of surrounding rural areas into the urban fabric. This demographic and land use transformation has altered several supply and delivery systems (in)to urban areas including food provisioning. Local authorities in secondary cities need to understand the nature of their food supply and, considering the challenges experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, prepare and plan for future crises. Although the available literature shows that the spatial extent of food source areas is shifting in boundaries and size, a clear understanding and empirical evidence on food flows across an urban-rural gradient for secondary cities in Uganda is... Although the available literature shows that the spatial extent of food source areas is shifting in boundaries and size, a clear understanding and empirical evidence on food flows across an urban-rural gradient for secondary cities in Uganda is relatively thin. We draw on co-design workshops with urban households, individual farmers and farmers’ groups/associations, (in)formal retailers/vendors, food processors and industrialists, urban policy actors and transporters to map urban food flows in two secondary cities in Uganda, Mbale City and Kasese Municipality, to inform a better understanding of the urban food shed and what it means for future food supplies for secondary cities.
