We then turn to the challenging task of outlining a new, gender-sensitive approach toward the study and practice of public diplomacy. Drawing on critical theories of gender, we discuss how the ideas of relationality, performativity, and ethics of care can push public diplomacy in new directions. We argue that a gender-sensitive approach would allow public diplomacy researchers and practitioners to develop modes of international engagement that emphasize collaboration, empathy, and a shared humanity. We conclude by identifying some challenges that gender-sensitive approaches to public diplomacy must address in the future. (Less)
