Sweden : Swedish society and football at odds with each other – So open, yet so closed

Herd, Katarzyna LU orcid (2025) p.188-205
Abstract
Katarzyna Herd, in this chapter, explores how inequalities and discriminatory practices in Swedish football manifest themselves in a country famous for its liberal and inclusive policies. She recognises that Sweden like most European countries has become a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society which is clearly reflected in Swedish football. After considering the emergence and (contested) social role of ethnic clubs in Swedish society and throwing some light on the related debates about inclusion and exclusion, cultural identity and ethnic differences, she uses a wide range of examples to show how the various forms of discrimination in Swedish football look like. She argues that racism exists at all various levels ranging from overt... (More)
Katarzyna Herd, in this chapter, explores how inequalities and discriminatory practices in Swedish football manifest themselves in a country famous for its liberal and inclusive policies. She argues that racism exists at all various levels ranging from overt racist abuse during matches to online attacks. She proposes that this is partly a reflection of a considerable increase in anti-immigration sentiments, exemplified by the Sweden Democrats (SD), a right-wing populist political party. She also shows that there is a plethora of policies to counter racism and xenophobia. Clubs play a vital role here and they often focus their efforts on socio-economic inequalities and employment as key factors that may help tackle different social problems, including racism and discrimination.
